The Facts: Government spending has shrunk
Contrary to popular belief, Alberta’s government spending has not soared. In fact, relative to the size of our economy, Alberta spends less than any other province.
There has been a long-term decline in spending as a portion of the Alberta economy. In 1989, provincial spending was more than 20 per cent of Alberta’s GDP. By 2008, it had dropped to 12 per cent. We can afford to spend more on provincial services.
