Read Letter - Education cuts short sighted
By Carrie Johnston
Written May. 29, 2011
A letter written to Mr. Carl Benito, Edmonton-Mill Woods
Dear Mr. Benito I am an education assistant and a mother of three children. I am horrified to learn of the cuts being made to the education system. This government is clearly not thinking of long term impact on our population when subjecting our children to oversized classes with too little staff and too little resources. As a classroom assistant I see first hand how a too large class leads to many children falling through the cracks - the teacher is forced to constantly just make it through the day, lucky if they can get through a lesson plan, much less interact with students and help those in need. It is so frustrating to know that as hard as you try, you just cannot get to everyone and that needs are not being met. I went into this profession to make a difference - I am demoralized each time I realize a child has been let down because we are stretched too thin; now I find that we are being asked to stretch even more? It can only stretch so far before it snaps and breaks. How can the government be committed to the future if they are not committed to the future generation that will be running this country? Overpopulated classrooms with little resources and too few staff does not meet the definition of education - it is the definition of warehousing and is completely unacceptable for a province and country as wealthy as ours.
