Read Letter - Cut to public services
By Taryn Chisholm
Written Jan. 21, 2010
A letter written to Ms. Teresa Woo-Paw, Calgary-Mackay
Dear Ms. Woo-Paw, I am writing to urge you to take a stand against the cuts planned in the public services department. As a student of the social work disploma program at Mount Royal University, I find it very disconcerting that there may be less money coming in to the social services that are already lacking funds. Cuts to such services will only hurt the most vulnerable in our community, and we are only as strong as the weakest members of that community. Seeing as Alberta is still in better financial shape than almost any other jurisdiction in North America, it is outrageous that the government is contamplating slashing funds to the services that need them most. It has been proven that strong public services and investment in public infrastructure is the best way to keep businesses competitive and local communities thriving. By keeping public services strong, our economy will strengthen, and our communities can only improve. I call on Premier Stelmach to invest in rather than cut public services to at least maintain, if not improve, this already great province. I thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you on this matter.
