Read Letter - Budget cuts
By Stephen Ross
Written Jan. 25, 2010
A letter written to Mr. Cal Dallas, Red Deer-South
Dear Cal, I lived through cuts to BC's education under Vanderzalm, and graduated into a recessed economy of the late1980s. I experienced first hand the unnecessary handicaps created by putting short term fiscal conservatism ahead of longer sighted economic and social responsibility. It troubles me that Alberta is looking to recreate BC's mistake. Cutting public services will unravel the fabric that keeps our local communities healthy and strong. Study after study has proven that a strong public service and investment in public infrastructure is the best way to keep our businesses competitive and our local communities thriving. There is no reason to cut – Alberta is still in better financial shape than almost any other jurisdiction in North America. We should be leading the way to show that we can be fiscally conservative AND socially responsible. I call on Premier Stelmach to invest, not cut, our public services like public heaSlth care and education. I have children in school and parents that need health care. Your cuts are targetting those least able toprotect their interests: the young and the elderly. But I will speak fir them and I will NOT support a government that continues to undermine the fabric of our communities and the prospects for our future success.
