Read Letter - Keeping Alberta Strong
By Barb Borkent
Written Jan. 15, 2010
A letter written to Hon. Iris Evans, Sherwood Park
Dear Iris Evans; I am writing to express my concern about the ongoing cuts to public services in Alberta. In order to have a strong & vibrant community, Alberta must invest in our children. It is essential to provide educational services in a manner that research has shown has the greatest impact on our children. This means smaller class sizes and well prepared & supported educators. It means more support for the students in the class with Educational Assistants & Educators with opportunities for Professional Development & access to resources for their students. It also means funding for the programs offered to infants, preschoolers & their families in order to reach their full potentials. The more we invest in Early Intervention, the greater the impact with the dollars spent. This means speech pathologists, audiologists, home visitors, mental health, children's services, community development, nurses and many other professionals who can impact the future of all Albertans. I see an Alberta where all individuals are respected and valued. Unfortunately, the cuts in Health Care, Education, Children's Services & other Government Programs will only result in a truly unfortunate loss of potential in so many of our children. I want to live in an Alberta that supports & cares for our seniors, handicapped and those unable to speak up for themselves. I am calling on you to represent my concerns and those of your constituents.
